It’s not unheard of for phones to have teething issues in their early days, but this appears more serious than most. Android Police notes that OnePlus Nord owners on the company’s forums (one, two, three) are reporting spontaneous factory resets that frequently lead to data loss.
It’s not certain what’s causing the issue, as it doesn’t appear tied to a particular firmware revision. The device wipes don’t require user intervention, either — some users report the OnePlus Nord resetting in their pockets. Others have reported multiple unexpected resets for the same device.
We’ve asked OnePlus for comment. AP‘s tipster said a OnePlus representative had promised that a fix was in development, but didn’t provide any further details. There’s no official mention of a way to mitigate or work around the issue.

This doesn’t necessarily mean your phone will be affected. As with other phone bugs, there’s a chance the factory resets are limited to a handful of units. However, it’s safe to say that you’ll want to back up any data on your OnePlus Nord that you can’t afford to lose. You don’t want to go without an irreplaceable text message log or memorable video.
It’s not certain how soon a fix might arrive. OnePlus updated the Nord roughly two weeks ago and might not have a quick turnaround. The factory resets have been occurring for several weeks, however. If OnePlus is already aware of a problem, it might have an update available relatively soon. You might not want to return your Nord or cancel your upgrade plans — just be aware that the phone appears to be in a rough state.
