Phones with a high refresh rate have been around since late 2017’s Razer Phone, but the technology gained a ton of traction in 2019 and 2020. Now, many flagships pack 90Hz or 120Hz displays while even some budget phones are offering the option.
High refresh rates allow for smoother-looking visuals when swiping through system menus and homescreens, and while scrolling through pages. It also enables higher frame-rates in supported games, making for a more visually pleasant experience.
High refresh rates are often combined with OLED panels in the premium tier, but this combination is pretty rare on budget and/or mid-range smartphones. Instead, brands wanting to offer high refresh rates often opt for cheaper LCD panels instead.
One case in point is the Realme 7 series, with the standard model offering a 90Hz LCD screen while the Realme 7 Pro delivered a 60Hz OLED display. In other words, there wasn’t an option that gave you the best of both worlds, namely those deep blacks combined with smoother visuals.
This turn of events got us thinking what you, the reader, would choose. If given the choice of two otherwise identical smartphones, would you opt for the one with the 60Hz OLED screen or the model with the high refresh rate LCD panel?
