  • Netflix is planning to launch a free weekend promotion in India.
  • This would see the firm’s library opened up to people for 48 hours.

Netflix currently offers a few movies and TV shows for free in order to entice more people to become subscribers, but now the company is planning to offer its entire catalog for free for a limited time.

The company confirmed its intention to launch a 48-hour StreamFest event in India, opening up its entire library of content to free users for a weekend.

Netflix chief operating officer and chief product officer Greg Peters explained the move during the Q3 earnings call:

And so an idea that we’re excited about, and we’ll see how it goes, but we think that giving everyone in a country access to Netflix for free for a weekend could be a great way to expose a bunch of new people to the amazing stories that we have, the service, how the service works, really create an event and hopefully get a bunch of those folks to sign up. So we’re going to try that in India, and we’ll see how that goes.

The plan comes after Protocol and XDA‘s Mishaal Rahman reported references to a 48-hour “StreamFest” event in the latest version of the Netflix Android app.

Text strings found in the app note that you won’t need to enter credit card information to take part in the event, so you don’t need to worry about getting charged after the promotion. Unfortunately, a text string referring to StreamFest being “at capacity” suggests that this is limited to a certain number of people. But hopefully the threshold is still pretty high.

On the wall about signing up for the service? Or maybe you’re just looking for more content to watch? Either way, you can check out our list of the best movies on Netflix or our rundown of the best TV shows on the platform.
